DP427BK. Sugar Chakra™ Bridge pickup.

The Sugar Chakra™ was developed for Phil Collen of Def Leppard.
An iconic player needs iconic pickups that’s why world-renowned guitarist Phil Collen has used DiMarzio pickups exclusively for over 40 years.
Phil wanted a single coil sized pickup with the weight and attack of a full-sized humbucker yet still retaining clarity.
Sugar Chakra™ is a thick creamy pickup with crunchy mids designed to feel like a full-sized humbucker in single coil form. The top end is smooth with mids that bite just enough to cut through the mix.
Phil road tested the Sugar Chakra™ on the G3 tour with Joe Satriani and John Petrucci. He says “It’s just really clear and precise but it’s got all the balls and the fire power. It’s gonna be awesome as a new addition to the DiMarzio family.

Area 58™ DP415W.
There are two major differences between a great vintage Strat pickup and an average one treble response and dynamics. A great pickup is clear and bright but not thin-sounding. A great one makes the sound jump out of the amp when you pick hard and drop way down when you play softly and the tone varies when the string is picked at different spots. The best pickup we’ve ever heard like this was from 1958 and that’s what inspired the Area 58™ with two major differences. Our pickup has way less magnet pull and virtually no hum.
Recommended For Neck and middle can also be used in bridge.
Tech Talk
The Area 58™ has obvious similarities to the Virtual Vintage 2.1 it replaces but there are several non-visible performance factors that have changed. Dynamic range and string definition are greatly increased leading to improvements in both clean chord-playing and overdriven soloing. The Area 58™ is very sensitive to small height adjustment differences close to the strings produces a fatter slightly compressed blues tone and further away yields crystal clean sounds. The final improvement is in noise reduction. All of the Virtual Vintage pickups have better hum cancellation than full-size humbuckers. Area 58™ and Area 61™ are even quieter.

Area 61™ DP416BK.

DiMarzio has been working on serious vintage single-coil design with no hum for twelve years. Our goal has always been to capture the best qualities of pickups we heard from the 1950s and early 60s. We’ve played several pickups from the early 60s that had a unique tonality they were steely yet woody-sounding. Naturally we wanted to nail this sound and we wanted to do it with no hum and less magnet-pull. The Area 61™ does it. It’s good in all three positions. It’s the perfect bridge pickup with a pair of Area 58™ pickups if you want to go all the way from Nashville to Texas in one guitar.

Recommended For All positions.

Tech Talk
Over the last 10 years we’ve gotten literally hundreds of requests from guitarists asking for the Texas blues sound. This sound is centered on single-coils from the early 1960s but it’s also based on heavy strings and strong hands. We can’t change your strings or your hands but the Area 61™ captures the tonal bedrock this sound is based on. Like the Area 58™ the Area 61™ really responds to different pick attacks played hard it sounds louder and tougher than you’d expect from a vintage pickup but it cleans up immediately by picking softer or rolling down the volume control. And like the Area 58™ its ability to cancel hum is superior to full-size humbuckers.

DP225W. BC-1™ Billy Corgan Neck pickup.

When we started working with Billy Corgan on the pickups for his signature Strat we sent him several models to try out. He liked the Air Norton S™ in the neck The Chopper™ in the middle and The Tone Zone S in the bridge. After playing them on several gigs he asked for some changes in the neck and bridge pickups. He wanted a deeper sound from the low strings without losing any punch and he didn t want the sound to get muddy with high-gain amps. To do this we lowered the frequency response of one of the the coils in each pickup just enough to boost the bass while opening up the mids. The end results are the pickups that are now in Billy s signature Strat. They do exactly what he wants in humbucking mode and he s found they work really well in split mode as well.

Recommended For All positions especially neck.

Tech Talk
The output and DC resistance specs of the DiMarzio BC-1™ and DiMarzio BC-2™ are very similar to those of the Air Norton S™ and Tone Zone S™ respectively. The difference is in the tuning of the coils and how this affects the way they interact with each other. It can be described as more of a feel than a sound difference — Billy s pickups seem to move more air.

HS-3™ DP117BK.

The HS-3™ has been the weapon of choice for Strat-powered classical metal since the early 1980s. Far from being a high-output monster the HS-3™ is actually a smooth and relatively quiet pickup that produces a sweet overdrive tone without jagged edges. These qualities combine perfectly with a heavily distorted amp because the sound won’t get muddy or messy. The HS-3™ is also versatile — it’s a noise-free pickup in a live situation or in the studio.

Recommended For All positions.

Tech Talk
The HS-3™ works very well with high-gain amps but the classic setup is with an overdrive pedal and a Marshall amp. The pedal boosts sustain and distortion and the sound cleans up dramatically when the pedal is switched off. Works well in all 3 positions on a Strat for a slightly warmer-than-usual Strat sound. Also works well as a bridge pickup with HS-4™ neck and HS-2™ middle. Combines in middle and neck positions with bridge humbuckers like PAF Pro PAF Air Classic™ and Norton.

DP174W. Red Velvet™.

The difference between a vintage Strat bridge pickup sound and a classic Broadcaster or Tele tone is mostly a matter of attack and definition — the Strat stings and screams while the Tele punches and sings. We thought it would be neat to have a Strat pickup that does both and this is it. The punch comes from the bottom-loaded Power Plate™ the sting from custom coil-winding and the True Velvet™ magnet stagger and a unique mid-range “growl that’s a result of a hand-calibrated magnet structure. Try a Red Velvet™ bridge pickup with a pair of True Velvet™ pickups for a sound that’s both classic and new.

Recommended For All positions.

Tech Talk
One of the obvious effects of mounting a plate on the bottom of a pickup is to boost the magnetic field. We wanted the bigger sound that the plate provides but we didn t want any increased magnet-pull so we calibrate the magnetic field of every Red Velvet™ after it s assembled. The Red Velvet™ was originally designed for the bridge position but it will also work well in the neck and middle where it can be combined with a bridge humbucker like the Air Classic™.

It s not difficult to make a vintage single-coil pickup that s clean and bright but not so easy if you also want the high strings to sound sweet above the 12th fret. The True Velvet™ Neck Model was designed to make this happen by tuning the coil to a frequency range that’s bright but not thin. We combined this with a magnet stagger specifically designed to enhance string balance which produces great clarity even with full chords. The True Velvet™ Neck Model comes standard with hand-ground magnets and vintage cloth covered wire.

Air Norton S™ DP180BK.

The Air Norton S™ is the Strat replacement version of the full-size Air Norton™. It’s warm sounding very well balanced and has the same unique tonal characteristics as the original. The original Air Norton™ wasn’t designed for a specific position or type of guitar but it has become most popular in the neck position of trem-equipped guitars for progressive music. Thanks John! The S version is also a very good bridge pickup for all types of rock. Its combination of medium output and harmonic bite are very effective for single-note soloing as well as chords.

Recommended For All positions.

Tech Talk
The original Airbucker™ pickups have an air gap between the magnet and the pole pieces. The Air Norton S™ doesn’t have this feature but the sound output and feel are so similar to the original that we couldn’t call it anything else. It’s very good in the neck position with The Tone Zone S or Super Distortion S in the bridge or in the bridge position with a Pro Track™ or The Chopper™ in the neck. DP181BK. Fast Track 1™.

The Fast Track 1™ is hotter and more muscular than The Cruiser but it’s still very bright and clean sounding — not at all like a full-size humbucker. The dual-blade continuous magnetic field creates an even string balance with very little magnet-pull eliminating the “out-of-tuneness common to rod-magnet designs. The Fast Track 1™ pickup’s power double the output of a standard single-coil makes it highly recommended in combination with medium - to - hot full-size humbuckers. You can also put a whole set of Fast Track 1™ pickups in a Strat style guitar or create custom sets with any of our other dual-blade models.

Recommended For All positions.

Tech Talk
The Fast Track 1 has more headroom than a vintage single-coil and performs well with both clean and overdriven amps. For any situation where single-coil sound with higher power and hum-cancellation is required. Can be used in any position in a standard Strat setup. Although it isn t as loud as high-output pickups it combines very well with all of our full-size humbuckers because it has the dynamic range to keep up especially with overdrive.

DP182W. Fast Track 2™ Bridge pickup.

It’s not any bigger than a single-coil pickup but the sound of the Fast Track 2™ puts it right in the wide open “everything-on-11 school. It’s got three times the output of an average single-coil with a huge mid-range and bass punch and a strong resemblance to the Super 3™. This is our hottest single-coil sized bridge pickup — particularly useful when you need a tightly focused jolt of power to crank your amplifier into rich overdrive. Combining it with a Pro Track™ Air Norton S™ BC-1™ orThe Chopper™ in the neck position and The Cruiser or Fast Track 1™in the middle makes a guitar with an outstanding heavy sound.

Recommended For Bridge position.

Tech Talk
To get some sense of the Fast Track 2™ it s best to think of it as a Strat-sized version of the Super 3™ the pickup it most closely resembles. Using a 500K volume control will open up the top end and we recommend this value. The best neck pickup choices with the Fast Track 2™ would be relatively hot models like the The Chopper™ Pro Track™. Air Norton S™ and BC-1™. We recommend brighter models like the Cruiser™ or Fast Track 1™ in the middle. You can also mix it with Stratier pickups like the Area and Virtual Vintage lines if you re prepared for the jump in power of the bridge position.

DP186BK. The Cruiser Neck.

If you’re a serious traditional Strat player you probably won’t want to know about pickups with side-by-side coils. But if you’re the player who’s up for something more modern with no 60-cycle hum string drop-outs or sustain-killing magnet pull we designed The Cruiser for you. Harmonic overtones are right where you expect them to be from a “true single-coil and the mid-range is open and vocal-sounding. It’s hotter than the traditional single-coil and the bass strings have a bit more chunk this is an excellent pickup to combine with medium-output humbuckers and it maintains its tonal identity with high-gain amps and multiple effects.

Recommended For Neck position with DP187 or neck and middle with higher output bridge pickup or full-size humbucker.

Tech Talk
The obvious question about The Cruiser is “How does it compare to a single-coil sound? Our feeling is that the unwound strings “E “B and “G are very close and the wound strings “D “A and low “E are a little fatter-sounding than a true single-coil. This is really effective for getting open-sounding chords because high and low strings sound more spread out from each other. Having a total magnet pull that s about 40% less than standard single-coils also means The Cruiser can be adjusted much closer to the strings for more power than stock pickups can achieve.
